The pouring medium supplied in this pour painting starter kit is designed to enhance the characteristics of our paints. A good medium doesn?t change the color or the finish of the paint it?s added to. High-quality mediums simply make paints flow more freely, which makes for better pours! This is exactly what this medium does. Mediums ?thin? your paints to give you more time to work with them on the surface. Again, your medium won?t change the visual characteristics like water would. It simply makes paint better to work with!
You can pour on any number of surfaces, such as ceramic tiles, vinyl records, driftwood, or even photo paper. Still, canvases are the go-to for most of us, especially at the beginning. We recommend starting out with a small canvas and then investing in other surfaces once you get some pours under your belt.
A good economy starter set of 8x10 inch canvases to get you going. Your first paintings might not turn out exactly as you plan, so practice on these smaller, inexpensive canvases before going for the larger or more premium versions. We recommend preparing your canvases and other surfaces with the gesso supplied in this pour painting starter set before you paint. Even though most canvases say they?re already primed, many artists prefer to apply another layer of gesso before pouring. This also reduces the amount of paint required for your final art piece!!
Pouring doesn?t depend (as much) on brushes and knives like other painting methods, but you definitely do need a few basics, including a few mixing cups and some popsicle sticks. This is all you need to mix the paints and the mediums for pour painting!
To begin, you will need to mix the acrylic paint with the pouring medium in a mixing cup.Mix slowly into paint to avoid creating bubbles.
Begin mixing using this basic ratio guideline and adjust until mixture is thin enough to flow easily off of surface when poured:
This is entirely up to you as to how 'fluid' you wish to make your paint, and to the effect you wish to create on your canvas. We recommend starting with a 1:3 mix and working up from there.
If you are using masking tape to mask off the edges, care should be taken when removing the tape. There is the possibility of breaking the film created by the paint. When removing the tape, wait until the paint is dry to touch. Use a craft knife to score along the edges of the tape. This will ensure the paint will not be pulled up with the tape.
Your artwork creation will be touch dry in around 4 hours and fully dry in around 24 hours. Clean with soap and water whilst wet. Enjoy!!
